Sisters Sandra McDowell and Kim Boatman partnered in 2005 to start a community newspaper in Oshawa called The Oshawa Express. Almost fifteen years later, the newspaper is a respected publication with many Ontario Community Newspaper Awards for its editorial content.

McDowell has spent 38 years in the newspaper industry, having begun her career as a journalist. From there she started her first community newspaper in 1992 and a sailing magazine in 1998, which still publishes today. Boatman brought her 20-year experience in human resources and sales to help make The Oshawa Express a success. She heads the sales department and helps to oversee the company along with McDowell.

“Working with my sister Kim has helped us to focus on the development of the newspaper,” says McDowell. “We have a level of trust and each person is committed to their work and strives to make good business decisions.”

“It’s a tough industry for women and having someone I trust beside me takes away a huge level of stress. We were always close growing up so the transition as business partners was easy.” Boatman says she is also pleased with being able to share in a working relationship. “I feel proud and honoured to be in partnership with my sister and we have worked hard to develop a well respected newspaper in our community,” adds Boatman.

Another major partnership that has stood the test of time is the one with their press.
McDowell discovered Webnews Printing and Publishing about 13 years ago when researching various presses in Ontario. She developed a good rapport with helpful staff and owner Dave Nguyen and has been printing with the company ever since.
“Good working relationships take time and two dedicated parties,” McDowell explains. “Webnews has always delivered for us. Staff is well trained and understands our needs and service. It is a company I can count on.”

Among the many duties the sisters sharing in running a business, both are Rotarians and volunteer extensively to make their city a better place to live and work.
